V&A Dundee

Opened on the 15th of September 2018, V&A Dundee is the only V&A museum in the world outside London.

It is the first ever dedicated design museum in Scotland:an international centre for design, a place of inspiration, discovery and learning.
Visitors will experience the remarkable story of design past, present and future and the vital contribution design makes to all our lives. The museum will feature permanent displays, changing exhibitions showcasing the very best of design from around the world, new design commissions and fast-changing installations by emerging designers, alongside creative learning projects for everyone to get involved with.

Designed by internationally acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, V&A Dundee stands at the centre of the £1 billion transformation of the Dundee waterfront, once part of the city’s docklands. With its complex geometry, inspired by the dramatic cliffs along the east coast of Scotland, it stretches out into the River Tay –a new landmark reconnecting the city with its historic waterfront, and a major new cultural development for Scotland and the UK.

Current exhibition - Hello Robot

This groundbreaking exhibition investigates the science and fiction of robots and looks at how they are changing the world we live in. Join us to explore how robots impact our lives, from fashion to architecture, and how design in turn is changing robotics.

Posing a series of provocative questions, the show will explore how popular culture has shaped our perception of robots and artificial humans, the impact this technology has had on industry and the increasing blurring of the boundaries between human and machine.

Hello Robot runs through to February 2020.

Ship ahoy! RRS Discovery

Climb aboard and follow in the footsteps of Scott and his crew, see how they lived, what they ate and witness their hardships and their triumphs. It’s a fascinating tale of one of the most heroic voyages of exploration ever undertaken and a great day out for all the family.

Find out more about this world class visitor attraction by visiting The Discovery Story

An intensive seven-month refurbishment programme began last year and was aided by a £40,000 crowdfunding campaign. The masts and rigging came down for repairs and were transported to a Gloucester-based shipyard. The same shipping specialists, T. Nielsen &Co, have spent the last four weeks replacing the parts.

Television presenter Lorraine Kelly, a Dundee resident, long-time supporter of the famous Antarctic exploration ship RRS Discovery and contributor to the crowdfunding campaign, said of the ship:"RRS Discovery is a major asset to the city of Dundee and beyond. She attracts many visitors and much well-deserved attention for her history and stories of adventure, also her links to Dundee, where she was designed and built.
"I'm happy to see that she's shipshape again and ready for visitors, and I hope you'll join me in looking forward to going on board again this summer."

The Discovery is looked after by the Dundee Heritage Trust. The charitable trust also operate the Verdant Works, which is a world class visitor attraction which tells the story of Dundee's industrial textile heritage in the atmospheric setting of a beautifully refurbished Mill building.
If your spending time in the city, both attractions are a must visit.
