You simply cannot beat the taste of fresh local Tayside strawberries. We are very lucky here at Balmuirfield as we are surrounded by many soft fruit growers and we can take our pick from the best produce that Scotland has to offer.
Most mornings I jump in the car and take the back road up behind the house, over the hill and onto the neighbouring farm, along the track until I come to the fridge outside the farmhouse. A fridge that is always stocked with fantastically fresh, juicy and tasty berries. I pay my dues in the honesty box and then it’s back into the car and head for home. So chances are, when my guests appear for breakfast, I know they are probably getting the best strawberries they’ll have ever had.
We’re always saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and so we use the best local ingredients we can find.
Anyone travelling around Dundee, Angus, Fife and Perthshire at this time of year can’t fail to notice the bounty of berries bursting out everywhere you look. Lots of farms offer the chance to ‘pick your own’ and if you’re on a driving tour of Scotland; having a punnet or two to snack on as you admire the scenery is a must.
We grow our own strawberries in the garden but they are not quite ready yet and we tend to use most of them to make our own jam. If you can’t beat fresh strawberries, then you definitely can’t beat homemade strawberry jam.
So, if our breakfast berries get you in the mood and you need extra juicy wonderfulness make sure you head to a few of the fantastic local producers.
